PEDIATRIC NURSING

Pediatric Teaching on Asthma

In this group presentation, we taught the class about asthma and pretended they were teenagers, who were our “intended audience”. We used PowerPoint and embedded a couple of videos, one playing a short interview clip of a teenager who struggled with asthma since she was young and how she was able to conquer it. Another video showed a demo on how to properly use a metered-dose inhaler and dry powder inhaler. These methods were chosen to be appropriate for teenagers’ cognitive level of thinking and learning. The content was tailored to address concerns that are relevant to our target audience: insecurities around friends and other people, importance of reliable support systems, availability of resources, and ability to live a normal life as active and productive  high school students despite the condition. Attached is a PDF copy of our presentation.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

ACLS and PALS

I attended the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) training right after the one for Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). I was able to immediately compare the algorithms used for adults versus those for the pediatric population, who are more delicate and as such, need a more delicate approach when doing CPR for example. One other major difference is with medication dosing where for children, we calculate the dose strictly based on weight. For example, while adult cardiac arrest resuscitation warrants administration of 1 mg epinephrine after 2 high-quality CPRs, the dosing for children should be calculated based on weight: 0.01 mg/kg/dose. Children, especially the younger ones, are also much more susceptible to respiratory conditions and emergency situations like choking. The PALS training provided awareness and education on these conditions' treatment and management that are specific to this age group.
